There are a number of treatments in prophylactic (preventive) dentistry that are meant specifically for young children, or patients who are unable to maintain optimal dental hygiene on their own. One of the most effective of these treatments is Dental Fissure Sealants. When children get cavities, they are usually on top of the posterior-most teeth. This is because the biting surface of the molars is most susceptible to carious attacks due to food debris accumulation, and improper cleaning.
The Sealant procedure is completely non-invasive, and 100% painless. It takes just a couple of minutes too. Our dentists at Theresa Frank DDS take a resin based filling material and apply a fine layer of it on the biting surfaces of all the molars. This creates a thin, but strong barrier between the upper-most layer of the teeth, and the bacteria that may invade and infect it. The layer can easily be re-applied the same way if it wears off over time. Fissure sealants have shown outstanding results in preventing childhood caries, and helping patients with certain disabilities combat dental infections with added protection. We advise all parents consider the treatment for their children, while educating them about the importance of dental hygiene maintenance at home.
